Samsung Displays iPhone 17 Pro at IFA to Lure Apple Users Before Foldable Launch
The tech giant is using a bold exhibition tactic and One UI 9 updates to lower the barrier for iPhone users switching to Galaxy devices.
Samsung Electronics took the unusual step of prominently displaying an Apple iPhone 17 Pro side-by-side with its own Galaxy Z Fold8 at the IFA 2026 exhibition in Berlin. The provocative display was designed to promote Samsung's 'Smart Switch' application, demonstrating the ease with which iOS users can migrate their data to the Android ecosystem.
This campaign coincides with the launch of the Galaxy Z8 series and the introduction of One UI 9, which features a new QR-code-based wireless transfer system. This update removes the previous requirement for iPhone users to install a separate app to begin the migration process. Furthermore, the updated Smart Switch capabilities now allow for the seamless transfer of high-friction data, including passwords, passkeys, and eSIM information.
The Premium Market Struggle
This aggressive marketing push comes as Samsung continues to fight for a larger slice of the high-margin premium smartphone market. Data from the first half of 2026 reveals a significant gap in dominance, with Apple holding a 65% share of the premium segment compared to Samsung's 19%. Since 2019, Samsung has relied on its foldable technology as its primary differentiator to attract high-spending consumers, creating a temporary sanctuary where it faced no direct competition from Apple.
Lowering the Switching Barrier
By placing a competitor's flagship device in the middle of its own exhibition hall, Samsung is shifting its strategy from pure hardware competition to ecosystem accessibility. The goal is to lower the "switching barrier," reducing the technical friction that often keeps users locked into the Apple ecosystem for years.
This strategy appears to be yielding immediate results. Samsung reports that pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Z Fold8 Ultra have increased by 30% compared to previous models, suggesting that the combination of new hardware and easier migration tools is resonating with consumers.
The Foldable Deadline
The timing of this campaign is critical. Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable phone, rumored to be the iPhone Ultra, on September 9, 2026. Once Apple enters the foldable space, Samsung will lose its sole hardware advantage in the premium tier.
By attempting to capture iPhone users now, Samsung is racing to build a loyal foldable user base before the market's most influential player introduces a competing device. Whether this preemptive strike can permanently shift market shares remains to be seen as the industry awaits Apple's official announcement.
