Samsung is abandoning its long-standing 5,000 mAh battery ceiling for Galaxy Ultra flagships, according to leaked specifications from five independent tech outlets.
The Galaxy S27 Ultra is reportedly slated for a 5,534 mAh rated capacity, marketed as 5,700 mAh typical. The newly introduced Galaxy S27 Pro will feature a 5,087 mAh rated cell (5,200 mAh typical), positioning it between the Plus and Ultra tiers in Samsung's expanded 2027 lineup.
Breaking the 5,000 mAh Plateau
For several generations, Samsung's Ultra series has capped out at 5,000 mAh typical capacity. The S26 Ultra shipped with a 4,855 mAh rated battery (5,000 mAh typical). The leaked figures represent a 14% increase in typical capacity for the Ultra model.
GSMArena, 9to5Google, Android Authority, SamMobile, and Galaxy Club have all reported consistent battery figures. The convergence across five outlets suggests these specifications originated from regulatory filings or early certification documents.
Four-Model Lineup Confirmed
The S27 series is expected to launch with four distinct models: Galaxy S27, S27+, S27 Pro, and S27 Ultra. The Pro tier marks a structural shift in Samsung's flagship strategy, inserting a new option between the Plus and Ultra for buyers seeking more than mid-tier specs without Ultra pricing.
SamMobile and 9to5Google corroborated the four-model structure, with TechAdvisor and BigGo News confirming the Pro's positioning. This expansion aligns with Samsung's broader 2027 flagship plans, which reportedly include eight Galaxy devices across multiple form factors.
What This Means for Battery Life
Larger capacity alone does not guarantee longer runtime. Processor efficiency, display power draw, and software optimization all factor into real-world endurance. However, a 5,700 mAh cell provides more headroom for power-hungry features like high-refresh displays and AI processing.
Chinese OEMs have pushed battery capacities beyond 5,500 mAh in recent flagships, often using silicon-carbon anode technology to increase energy density without adding thickness. Android Authority confirmed Samsung's Z Fold 8 series employs this chemistry, though the company has not officially verified its use in the S27 lineup.
Consumer Pressure and Competition
Battery longevity has been a persistent criticism of Samsung flagships relative to competitors. The capacity increase suggests Samsung is responding to market pressure, particularly from Chinese brands that have normalized 5,500+ mAh batteries in premium devices.
