Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 3 Leaked: Squircle Design Ditches Keyring Loop
Samsung's next item tracker reportedly abandons its pill shape and built-in attachment for a sleeker form factor, with a potential September 2026 launch.
Samsung is preparing a significant redesign of its Galaxy SmartTag tracker, according to leaks published this week. The Galaxy SmartTag 3 will abandon the pill-shaped chassis of its predecessor in favor of a "squircle" design—a hybrid between a square and a circle—with a central button and no built-in lanyard hole.
A Departure from SmartTag 2
The SmartTag 2, launched in October 2023, retained the same basic form factor as the original SmartTag from January 2021: a pill-shaped tracker with an integrated loop for keyrings and bags. The SmartTag 3 marks the first major visual overhaul in the product line's history, according to reports from SamMobile, Android Authority, and SammyGuru.
The new squircle shape includes a central button for user interaction. However, the redesign comes with a tradeoff: multiple outlets indicate the SmartTag 3 may lack a built-in attachment loop entirely. Users would need to purchase a separate case or accessory to mount the tracker to keys, bags, or other items.
Launch Timing and Context
Tipster Roland Quandt reported that Samsung may unveil the SmartTag 3 in September 2026, potentially alongside the Galaxy S26 FE. Samsung has not commented on the leaks.
The SmartTag series competes directly with Apple's AirTag in the item-tracking space, leveraging Samsung's SmartThings Find network to locate lost items through crowdsourced Galaxy devices. Google has also expanded its Find My Device network to support third-party trackers, intensifying competition in the Android ecosystem.
Design Priorities Shift
The removal of the built-in loop suggests Samsung is prioritizing aesthetics and a cleaner industrial design over the convenience of direct attachment. This approach mirrors Apple's AirTag, which also requires a separate accessory for mounting but offers a more minimalist profile.
For existing SmartTag users, the redesign may introduce friction. The SmartTag 2's integrated loop allowed immediate attachment to keyrings without additional purchases. If the SmartTag 3 requires a separate case for mounting, Samsung may need to bundle or discount accessories to avoid user backlash.
What Remains Unclear
The leaks do not confirm whether the SmartTag 3 will retain the SmartTag 2's improved battery life, which Samsung rated at up to five years under typical use. Connectivity specifications—whether the tracker will support Bluetooth 5.3, ultra-wideband (UWB) for precision finding, or both—also remain unconfirmed.
Pricing has not been disclosed. The SmartTag 2 launched at $29.99 for a single unit and $89.99 for a four-pack in the United States.
Samsung last updated the SmartTag line in October 2023, making a late-2026 refresh roughly a three-year cycle. If the September 2026 timeline holds, the SmartTag 3 would arrive nearly five years after the original SmartTag debuted.
