Samsung Galaxy Z8 Series Sets Global Pre-order Records
A 30% global surge in pre-orders for the Z8 lineup signals a shift toward mainstream foldable adoption.
Samsung's latest foldable lineup has achieved record-breaking initial demand, signaling a significant pivot in consumer appetite for foldable hardware. The Galaxy Z8 series—comprising the Z Fold 8 Ultra, Z Fold 8, and Z Flip 8—has set new pre-order benchmarks across key markets, including South Korea and the United States.
In South Korea, the series reached 1.44 million pre-orders within a seven-day window, surpassing the previous record of 1.38 million units held by the Galaxy Note 10 series. According to Samsung, demand was so intense that an average of approximately 140 devices were sold every minute during the pre-order period. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 emerged as the clear favorite in the domestic market, accounting for roughly 70% of all pre-orders. This momentum extends globally, with total pre-orders for the Z8 series increasing by more than 30% compared to the previous year's foldable offerings.
Design Shift and Market Strategy
The surge in interest follows a strategic redesign of the Z Fold 8, which now features a 4:3 aspect ratio and a "passport-sized" form factor. This design shift was intended to make the foldable more portable and appealing to users accustomed to traditional "bar-type" smartphones. The strategy appears to be working; data from SK Telecom indicates that approximately 62% of pre-order customers were switching from conventional smartphones to the foldable format.
Mainstream Adoption Indicators
These figures suggest that foldable technology is moving beyond the niche of early tech adopters and into the mainstream. Growth is particularly evident in emerging markets. In India, 271,000 units were reserved within the first 72 hours—a milestone that took 15 days to achieve during last year's launch. Furthermore, the series is currently on pace to set a new Galaxy Z pre-order record specifically within the U.S. market.
Future Outlook
As Samsung continues to refine the ergonomics of its foldables, the industry will be watching to see if these pre-order spikes translate into long-term market share gains over traditional slabs. While the initial numbers are historic, the primary metric for success will be whether the Z8 series can maintain this growth trajectory through the general sales cycle and successfully convert a majority of the remaining bar-phone user base.
