Samsung Opens Fold 8 Pre-orders With New Ultra Tier at $2,099
The foldable lineup splits into standard and Ultra variants as Samsung defends against Honor and Chinese rivals.
Samsung opened pre-orders for its 2026 foldable lineup on July 22 at Galaxy Unpacked in London, introducing a three-device strategy that mirrors the company's S-series hierarchy. The new Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra leads at $2,099, while the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,899 and the Galaxy Z Flip 8 rounds out the trio.
Ultra Takes the Premium Crown
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra targets power users with a 6.5-inch cover display and 8-inch internal Dynamic AMOLED screen. The camera system marks the biggest departure from previous Fold models: a 200MP main sensor paired with a 50MP ultra-wide and 10MP telephoto offering 3x optical zoom.
That camera upgrade comes with a price increase. The Ultra's $2,099 tag represents a $100 jump from the Galaxy Z Fold 7's $1,999 launch price. Samsung is betting that buyers willing to pay premium prices want premium specs across the board.
Standard Fold Gets Wider, Cheaper
The regular Galaxy Z Fold 8 takes a different approach. It sports a 7.6-inch internal display and 50MP main camera—substantially less than the Ultra's 200MP sensor but aligned with flagship standards. At $1,899, it undercuts last year's Fold 7 while offering a wider form factor that Samsung says improves one-handed usability.
This tiered strategy lets Samsung target two distinct buyer profiles: enthusiasts who want the absolute best hardware regardless of cost, and mainstream adopters who want foldable functionality at a more accessible price point.
Flip 8 Holds the Line
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 maintains the clamshell foldable's core proposition with a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED main display and 4.1-inch cover screen. It lacks the Ultra branding and camera upgrades, serving buyers who prioritize portability over productivity.
Pre-order Incentives Stack Up
Samsung is pushing early adoption with aggressive trade-in values. Customers can receive up to $1,200 in credits for eligible devices including the Galaxy S26 Ultra or Galaxy Z Fold 7. That effectively brings the Ultra's real-world cost down to around $900 for qualified buyers.
Retailers are matching the momentum. Amazon is offering $350-$400 gift cards for Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Ultra pre-orders, plus a $200 gift card for the Flip 8. These stackable incentives could determine which model buyers ultimately choose when the math favors the Ultra despite its higher sticker price.
Why the Ultra Matters
The introduction of Ultra branding to the Fold line signals Samsung's response to intensifying competition from Honor and Chinese manufacturers who have been closing the gap on foldable hardware. By diversifying within the Fold family itself—rather than relying solely on the Flip to capture budget-conscious buyers—Samsung creates room to experiment with premium features without alienating price-sensitive customers.
Pre-orders are open now, with general availability expected in early August.
