Samsung RAM Plus offers little benefit for flagship Galaxy devices
Technical tests reveal that Samsung's virtual memory feature is largely redundant for high-end phones despite being enabled by default.
Samsung's RAM Plus feature, designed to boost device memory by using internal storage, provides negligible benefits for flagship smartphones. While the tool offers modest multitasking improvements for budget hardware, it fails to deliver noticeable performance or battery gains for premium devices.
According to a technical review by Android Police, RAM Plus functions as a virtual memory system that allocates a portion of the phone's internal storage to act as RAM for idle background applications. Testing found that devices equipped with 6GB of RAM or less experienced slightly slower multitasking performance when the feature was disabled. However, flagship devices with 8GB or 12GB of RAM saw no noticeable degradation in app performance or battery life after the feature was turned off.
The Mechanics of Virtual RAM
Virtual RAM, often referred to as swap space, is a long-standing computing concept where disk space serves as an overflow for physical memory. Samsung integrated this into its One UI ecosystem under the "RAM Plus" branding, initially debuting the feature on mid-range handsets before expanding it across the entire Galaxy lineup. Because internal storage flash memory is fundamentally slower than physical LPDDR RAM, the implementation has faced scrutiny from power users who prioritize physical memory efficiency over virtual expansion.
Marketing vs. Performance
This discrepancy highlights a growing tension between marketed specifications and actual user experience. By enabling RAM Plus by default on all Galaxy phones, Samsung can effectively claim higher memory capacities on its budget-tier devices. However, on premium hardware, the feature operates as a redundancy that provides no tangible advantage to the user. Rahul Naskar of Android Police described the capability as an "illusion," noting that users do not actually receive more physical RAM.
Managing the Setting
For users looking to evaluate the impact of the feature on their own devices, RAM Plus can be managed via Settings > Device Care > Memory. While the feature remains a default setting across the ecosystem, the data suggests that owners of high-spec Galaxy devices may find no functional difference in their daily usage whether the setting is active or disabled. Future updates from Samsung will be watched to see if the company moves toward a more hardware-dependent default configuration.
