Samsung Simplifies iOS Migration with QR-Based Transfers for New Foldables

Samsung is aggressively targeting the friction of ecosystem lock-in by streamlining how Apple users migrate to its latest hardware. The company has updated its Smart Switch data transfer tool and One UI 9 to simplify the transition for owners of the new Galaxy Z Fold8, Z Fold8 Ultra, and Z Flip8.

In a significant departure from previous workflows, iOS users can now initiate a data transfer by simply scanning a QR code displayed on the Galaxy device. According to Samsung, this new process eliminates the requirement to install the Smart Switch app on the iPhone entirely. The update also expands the scope of migratable data; Smart Switch now supports the transfer of passwords, passkeys, call history, accessibility settings, and eSIM information from iOS to Galaxy. Furthermore, Samsung has integrated AirDrop compatibility into Quick Share to facilitate ongoing file sharing between Galaxy and iOS devices.

Breaking the Ecosystem Lock

For years, the "switching cost"—the technical and social burden of leaving an ecosystem—has served as a primary barrier for high-value iOS users. While basic contacts and photos have long been transferable, deeper system integrations like eSIMs and passkeys often required manual reconfiguration or third-party workarounds. By automating these specific technical hurdles, Samsung is attempting to make the leap to a foldable device less disruptive and more immediate.

Industry Implications

The addition of AirDrop compatibility is particularly strategic. File sharing is often a social friction point in mixed-device environments, where the inability to quickly send a document or photo to a peer can discourage a user from switching platforms. By bridging this gap via Quick Share, Samsung is reducing the social penalty of leaving the Apple ecosystem. Additionally, the inclusion of eSIM transfer addresses one of the most tedious aspects of cellular activation, removing a significant technical hurdle during the initial device setup.

Requirements and Availability

The new transfer method is not universal across all software versions. Samsung specifies that the process requires Android 17 or later and iOS 26.6 or later to function. Additionally, the company noted that these specific transfer enhancements are unavailable in mainland China. Users must ensure their devices meet these version requirements to utilize the app-free QR initiation and expanded data migration features.
