Samsung Solves 'Impossible' Folding Metal Problem for Galaxy Z Fold 8

The Korean giant replaced polymer film with Flex Titanium technology, deploying aerospace-grade materials and micro-perforation techniques to finally tackle the crease that has plagued foldables since 2019.

After seven years of iterating on foldable phone design, Samsung has made its biggest architectural shift yet: replacing the polymer film in its display stack with a titanium-based structure that the company's own engineers described as seeming "impossible" to manufacture.

Flex Titanium replaces polymer film

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra introduce what Samsung calls Flex Titanium technology, which integrates a titanium-alloy film roughly one-third the thickness of a human hair directly into the folding mechanism. BD Yang, Samsung's Deputy Head of Core Component Technology Team, said in an interview that the team began internally referring to the project as "Saving Private Ryan" because creating a folding layer of metal appeared unachievable.

"This time around we decided that titanium had the best fit for foldable form," Yang said. "Why? It's strong, stable, resistant to permanent deformation under external force... and offers improved elastic recovery."

The manufacturing process required novel techniques: wet-etching dissolves material in the bottom titanium plate while laser-cut micro-holes perforate the top section, allowing the metal to flex at the hinge point while maintaining rigidity across the display surface.

New aspect ratios and battery tech

Beyond the display overhaul, the Z Fold 8 introduces a reformatted screen geometry. The exterior display shifts to a 16:10 aspect ratio, while the unfolded interior adopts a 4:3 ratio optimized for content consumption and productivity workflows.

Samsung also deployed silicon-carbon (Si-C) battery technology across the Z Fold 8 series for the first time. The Z Fold 8 Ultra packs a 5000mAh cell despite a slimmer overall chassis, addressing one of the traditional tradeoffs in foldable design.

Why this matters

The visible crease has been the primary criticism of foldable phones since Samsung launched the original Galaxy Fold in 2019. Previous generations relied on ultra-thin glass and polymer films that reduced but never eliminated the depression along the hinge line. By integrating titanium—a material common in aerospace and high-end sports equipment for its strength-to-weight ratio—Samsung aims to make the crease both less visible and less prone to long-term degradation.

The move signals Samsung's attempt to push foldables beyond early-adopter novelty into mainstream territory, where durability and display quality must match traditional slab phones. With competitors reportedly preparing their own foldable entries, eliminating the crease may be the difference between a niche product and a viable flagship alternative.

The Z Fold 8 series launched at Samsung's Unpacked event in July 2026, alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 8, which also adopts the silicon-carbon battery technology.
