Samsung Tethers Smart Glasses to Phones, Bets Against Meta's Standalone Vision

Samsung is betting the future of wearable computing doesn't mean leaving your phone behind. At Galaxy Unpacked in London on July 22, the company unveiled Intelligent Eyewear—smart glasses designed to work with Galaxy smartphones rather than replace them.
A Different Path Than Meta
While Meta positions its AI glasses as a potential smartphone successor, Samsung is leveraging its mobile dominance. The glasses use a split-computing model: AI-intensive tasks like translation, navigation, and image processing run on connected Galaxy phones, not the frames themselves.
"Smart glasses are an extension of the experience centered on the smartphone, rather than being a post-smartphone device," said Choi Jae-in, Samsung Electronics Head of XR Research & Development.
Hardware Built for Daily Wear
The glasses run on Qualcomm's Snapdragon AR1 platform and deliver up to nine hours of battery life. Samsung partnered with eyewear specialists Gentle Monster and Warby Parker on the design, signaling that form factor matters as much as function.
The device underwent smartphone-grade durability testing, including exposure to sunscreen and cosmetics—real-world conditions that kill many wearables. Approximately 10% of Samsung's smart glasses patents focus on privacy and misuse prevention, including safeguards against covering recording indicators.
Why Tethering Makes Sense
Samsung's approach addresses the core hardware trade-off in wearables: computing power versus comfort. By offloading processing to the phone, the glasses stay lightweight enough for all-day wear. The strategy also protects Samsung's smartphone business instead of cannibalizing it.
The launch arrives amid intensified competition in AI-integrated wearables. Samsung's ecosystem play—connecting glasses with Galaxy phones, watches, and buds—contrasts sharply with rivals chasing standalone AR dreams hampered by battery and thermal constraints.
Samsung's message is clear: the phone isn't going anywhere. The glasses just make it more useful.
