Samsung Wallet adds Digital Key support for Volkswagen EVs in Europe

Galaxy smartphone users can now lock, unlock, and start select Volkswagen ID. models without a physical key.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · August 18, 2026

Samsung Electronics and Volkswagen have partnered to integrate Digital Key support into Samsung Wallet for select Volkswagen ID. electric vehicles. Starting August 18, 2026, compatible Galaxy smartphone users in Europe can lock, unlock, and start their vehicles without a physical key.

The integration supports a wide range of Volkswagen models, including the ID.Polo, ID.Cross, ID.3neo, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, and ID.Buzz. To utilize the feature, vehicles must have been produced on or after April 27, 2026, and must be running ID. software version 6.0.1 or later. Additionally, the vehicle must be equipped with the "Preparation for Digital Key" option package.

The Technology Behind the Key

The system employs a dual-technology approach to ensure reliability and convenience. It utilizes Ultra-Wideband (UWB) for hands-free entry, allowing the car to detect the owner's approach and unlock automatically. For those preferring a manual trigger or as a backup, Near Field Communication (NFC) enables tap-based access. Beyond basic entry, the functionality extends to starting the vehicle and using Remote Key Entry specifically for opening the trunk.

A Shift Toward Phone-as-a-Key

This partnership is part of a broader industry shift toward "phone-as-a-key" (PaaK) technology, which is being standardized by the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC). By moving the vehicle key into the digital realm, Samsung Wallet aims to centralize a user's essential digital assets—including payment cards, identification, and vehicle access—into a single secure ecosystem. This security is underpinned by Samsung Knox, ensuring that the digital credentials remain protected from unauthorized access.

Industry Implications

For the European EV market, this integration removes the reliance on physical hardware for a significant portion of drivers and enhances the overall "connected car" experience. The transition from approach to ignition is designed to be seamless, reducing friction in the daily commute. Furthermore, the ability to share digital keys with trusted individuals provides new utility for multi-driver households or professional valet services, where physical key hand-offs were previously required.

What to Watch

While the European rollout is now active for the specified models, users should verify their software version to ensure compatibility with the 6.0.1 requirement. It remains to be seen if this integration will expand to other regions or if additional Volkswagen models will be added to the supported list in future software updates.
