SK Hynix Taps Xiaomi for LPDDR6 Launch as H2 2026 Shipments Loom

SK Hynix is preparing for mass production of LPDDR6 memory, with volume shipments expected in the second half of 2026. The company has reportedly secured Xiaomi as its first confirmed customer, a significant win in the race to equip flagship smartphones with the bandwidth required for next-generation on-device AI.

The LPDDR6 Advantage

LPDDR6 represents the next evolution in low-power mobile memory, delivering higher data transfer speeds and reduced power consumption compared to the current LPDDR5X standard. SK Hynix is manufacturing the chips using its sixth-generation 10nm (1c) process, critical for supporting the computational demands of local large language model processing and what the industry now terms "agentic AI."

The transition is not merely incremental. As smartphones increasingly handle complex AI inference tasks locally rather than relying on cloud servers, memory bandwidth has become a bottleneck. LPDDR6 addresses this by providing the throughput necessary for real-time AI features without draining battery life.

A Strategic Foothold in China

Xiaomi's commitment to SK Hynix carries weight beyond a single OEM partnership. According to reporting from HardwarePremium and Wccftech, the deal positions the Korean manufacturer ahead of Chinese competitor CXMT, which is reportedly lagging in the transition to DDR6-class memory. The move suggests that major Chinese OEMs are prioritizing technological readiness and supply reliability over domestic sourcing preferences.

Industry observers note that SK Hynix is also developing LPDDR6 for AI server applications, including modules in the SOCAMM form factor.

What This Means for the Supply Chain

The partnership signals a potential shift in how Chinese hardware manufacturers evaluate memory suppliers. While domestic alternatives like CXMT have gained ground in recent years, the technical requirements of AI-ready devices appear to be resetting the competitive landscape.

For Xiaomi, securing early access to LPDDR6 could provide a differentiation advantage in the flagship segment, where manufacturers are racing to market devices capable of sophisticated local AI processing. For SK Hynix, the Xiaomi agreement establishes a reference customer ahead of broader availability in late 2026.

Volume shipments remain on track for the second half of next year, with integration into flagship smartphone platforms expected to follow.
