SK Hynix has approved a massive investment of approximately 54 trillion won, or roughly $38 billion, to construct two new fabrication plants in South Korea. The move aims to aggressively scale production of critical memory components to keep pace with the global explosion of artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The investment is split between two strategic locations. The company will allocate 35.2 trillion won to develop the 'Y2' fab in Yongin and 19.1 trillion won for the 'M17' fab in Cheongju. These facilities will focus on increasing the output of DRAM and NAND flash memory, with a specific emphasis on High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), the specialized hardware essential for AI accelerators.

This expansion comes as the global semiconductor industry faces an unprecedented surge in demand for high-performance memory.
