Snapchat blocks fully AI-generated videos from Spotlight
The platform is deprioritizing 'AI slop' to prioritize authentic human storytelling.
Snapchat has updated its recommendation systems to ensure wholly AI-generated videos are no longer eligible for public discovery in Spotlight. The move prioritizes human-made content over high-volume, low-quality generative AI output, often called "AI slop."
This policy applies regardless of whether the content includes transparency disclosures. While fully synthetic videos are ineligible for recommendations, creators may still use AI tools to enhance or edit their work. Snapchat adds visible watermarks to any content produced using its own internal AI tools.
Snapchat stated it wants Spotlight to remain a place for discovering "authentic creativity from real people," noting the "enduring value in rewarding original perspectives, personal storytelling, and the moments that people choose to create and share themselves."
A broader industry shift
Snapchat's crackdown mirrors a trend across social and professional platforms fighting algorithmic clickbait:
- LinkedIn added a reporting button for content that "seems like AI slop."
- Substack implemented AI detection for its newsletters.
- YouTube clarified that "inauthentic content," including generic or repetitive AI-generated material, is ineligible for monetization.
As generative AI lowers the barrier to production, these shifts signal a strategic pivot toward valuing human perspective over the volume of algorithmically generated media.
