Sony brings Android 17 to Xperia 1 VIII with new Desktop mode
The latest flagship update introduces PC-style productivity tools and enhanced customization for creators.
Sony has begun deploying the Android 17 operating system update to its flagship Xperia 1 VIII. The rollout has first appeared for users in Germany and the UK, marking the first major OS jump for the current flagship device.
The update, identified as version 73.1.A.2.61, carries a download size of approximately 1.2GB. The release introduces a suite of productivity and aesthetic enhancements, most notably a PC-style Desktop mode that allows the device to function as a workstation when connected to external displays. Other functional upgrades include a revamped Quick Settings panel featuring resizable tiles and an improved screen recording utility that now supports simultaneous audio capture from both the device and the microphone.
Expanding the Ecosystem
The Xperia 1 VIII entered the market only a few months ago, launching with Android 16. Sony has positioned this hardware specifically for photography enthusiasts and content creators, a strategy reflected in the AI-driven camera tools bundled with this OS transition. While the 1 VIII is the primary focus of the current rollout, Sony has confirmed that five models are eligible for the Android 17 upgrade: the Xperia 1 VIII, 1 VII, 1 VI, as well as the 10 VIII and 10 VII.
Productivity and Personalization
Beyond the productivity gains of Desktop mode, the update focuses heavily on user interface personalization. The updated "Wallpaper & style" menu now grants users the ability to customize the specific shape and style of app icons, complemented by a variety of new clock designs.
This shift toward a desktop-like experience across multiple generations—specifically the 1 VI, 1 VII, and 1 VIII—significantly alters the utility of the hardware. By transforming the smartphone into a productivity tool capable of interfacing with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, Sony is attempting to bridge the gap between mobile portability and desktop efficiency for its power users.
What to Watch
As the rollout expands beyond the UK and Germany, users in other regions should monitor their system update settings for version 73.1.A.2.61. While the core feature set is now confirmed, the exact timeline for the remaining eligible Xperia 10 series devices remains to be seen. Industry observers will be watching to see if this expanded productivity focus influences Sony's future hardware iterations for the creator market.
