SoundCloud launches zero-commission direct-to-fan music sales

The platform is beta testing a storefront feature for Artist Pro subscribers to challenge Bandcamp's indie dominance.

SoundCloud is introducing a new feature that allows musicians to sell their music directly to fans via their profile pages. The move transforms the platform from a discovery-only hub into a direct monetization tool for independent creators.

The rollout begins as a beta test involving 200 US-based Artist Pro subscribers, with SoundCloud planning to expand the feature to more creators later this fall. In a significant departure from industry norms, SoundCloud will not take a commission cut from these sales, though artists remain responsible for applicable taxes and processing fees. Participating musicians can determine their own pricing and choose the digital formats they offer to listeners, such as MP3 or WAV.

The shift toward ownership

Historically, SoundCloud has served as a primary discovery engine for emerging talent, but the platform lacked native e-commerce capabilities. To monetize their work, artists typically directed fans to external storefronts, most notably Bandcamp. This shift comes as younger audiences show a renewed interest in music ownership over the rental model of streaming services.

SoundCloud's entry into the direct-sales market arrives during a period of instability for Bandcamp. The indie-favorite platform has faced significant operational questions and internal turmoil following substantial layoffs within its engineering teams under the ownership of Songtradr.

Challenging the indie status quo

By removing the middleman fee and integrating the storefront directly into the discovery experience, SoundCloud is positioning itself as a primary financial engine for the independent music economy. This strategy directly challenges Bandcamp's long-standing dominance in the "buy-to-own" space by reducing the friction between a fan discovering a track and purchasing it.

For the artist, the zero-commission model maximizes the revenue per sale, providing a more sustainable alternative to the fractional payouts associated with streaming. This integration allows creators to maintain a tighter relationship with their audience without relying on third-party redirects.

Next steps for creators

SoundCloud stated that starting with a limited creator group provides a "direct feedback loop" to identify friction points and determine what features artists want built next. While the current test is limited to a small group of US subscribers, the broader fall expansion will determine if the tool can scale to a global creator base. Observers will be watching to see if this move triggers a wider migration of indie catalogs away from struggling legacy storefronts.
