SpaceX Targets First Half of 2028 for 5G-Quality Mobile Satellite Service

SpaceX aims to launch a "5G-quality" mobile satellite service for smartphone users in the first half of 2028. The move signals a direct challenge to traditional telecommunications infrastructure by offering global connectivity without the need for terrestrial cell towers.
Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference, SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen revealed the updated timeline, which represents a slight delay from the company's previous goal of late 2027. To support this high-capacity service, SpaceX will deploy more capable V3 satellites throughout 2027 using its Starship launch system. Johnsen noted that the resulting product will be "completely differentiated from anything out there," specifically highlighting the ability to provide global roaming and a network that "shouldn't have dead zones."
The Infrastructure Play
This initiative is an evolution of SpaceX's "Direct to Cell" capabilities, which began with initial satellite launches in early 2024 to provide basic connectivity. To transition to a full-scale mobile service, SpaceX has secured midband spectrum purchased from EchoStar. This spectrum has received FCC approval for both terrestrial capabilities and direct-from-space operations, providing the legal and technical foundation for the company to operate as a mobile provider.
Industry Friction
Despite the technical progress, SpaceX faces significant resistance from the established telecommunications industry. According to reports, the "Big Three" U.S. carriers—AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon—have refused to sign Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreements with the company. Such agreements typically allow a smaller provider to lease network capacity from a larger one, but the refusal suggests the major carriers view SpaceX as a direct competitor rather than a potential partner.
Market Implications
If SpaceX successfully deploys its V3 constellation and activates its mobile service, it could disrupt the existing telecommunications oligopoly.
