SpaceXAI, formerly known as xAI, will remove 69 unpermitted gas turbines powering its data center infrastructure in the Memphis, Tennessee, and Southaven, Mississippi, region.
The decision follows a lawsuit filed by the NAACP, which alleged the turbines violated the Clean Air Act and exposed local communities to hazardous pollution. The dispute centered on the company's use of temporary turbines to meet the massive energy demands of its AI infrastructure.
Federal Intervention
The U.S. Department of Justice intervened in the legal conflict, filing to have the NAACP's lawsuit dismissed while citing concerns over national, economic, and energy security.
Environmental Impact
While the NAACP highlighted pollution risks, SpaceXAI maintained that local air quality continues to meet or exceed EPA standards.
