Starlink halts new sign-ups in major Nigerian cities due to capacity limits
Urban congestion and rising costs in Nigeria highlight the technical hurdles of scaling satellite internet in densely populated markets.
Starlink has hit network capacity limits in Nigeria's largest urban centers, forcing the company to halt new subscriptions in several major hubs. The move underscores the inherent difficulty of deploying satellite-based internet in densely populated cities where bandwidth demand quickly outstrips available supply.
Starlink has stopped accepting new orders in key Nigerian areas, including Abuja and Lagos hubs such as Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Ikeja, and Surulere. Prospective users visiting the Starlink website in these regions are now met with a notification stating that service is "currently at capacity" and are instead prompted to pay a deposit to join a waitlist.
The Cost of Urban Density
This capacity crunch arrives amid a period of economic volatility and shifting user numbers. Data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reveals that Starlink lost more than 6,000 active users in the first quarter of 2025, with the user base dropping from 65,564 in the fourth quarter of 2024 to 59,509.
Financial pressure has also mounted for existing customers. The monthly service fee in Nigeria has risen significantly, climbing from approximately ₦38,000 ($25) at the time of launch to ₦56,000 ($37) in 2025. These pricing increases, combined with the inability to scale in cities, suggest a clash between SpaceX's global business model and the local economic realities of the African market.
The Infrastructure Gap
While satellite internet is highly effective for bridging connectivity gaps in rural or remote regions, urban environments present a different set of challenges. High user density in cities quickly exhausts the bandwidth available per satellite beam. Furthermore, the physical landscape of a city—characterized by a "wall of steel and concrete"—creates significant signal blockage that terrestrial infrastructure is better equipped to handle.
This situation serves as a critical test for SpaceX's broader ambitions. If the company cannot manage capacity in early African markets, its goal of providing a global blanket of coverage may remain limited to niche rural applications rather than becoming a viable competitor to primary mobile carriers in urban settings.
The Path to Mobile
To address these limitations, SpaceX is pushing forward with "Starlink Mobile," a direct-to-cell service designed to connect standard smartphones to satellites. However, these ambitions also face the same physical barriers of urban infrastructure that plague the current fixed-dish service.
To overcome these hurdles, SpaceX plans to launch next-generation Starlink Mobile satellites. These V2 satellites are intended to provide a service that is "100 times better" than current direct-to-cell capabilities. Whether this technical leap can sufficiently penetrate the concrete jungles of cities like Lagos remains to be seen.
