Supernatural VR Fitness Relaunches as Independent Entity After Meta Exit

The popular VR exercise app returns with its full workout library and original coaches after spinning off from Meta.

Supernatural is relaunching as an independent company following a period of instability under Meta's ownership. The move comes after Meta cut staff and paused content for the VR exercise app in January, marking a significant pivot for the fitness platform.

Leanne Pedante, Supernatural's Head of Fitness, confirmed that the reboot will restore the app's extensive library of more than 3,000 workouts along with its original roster of coaches. "We have a library of over 3,000 workouts that we've built over the years — all of that comes back," Pedante told Engadget. Along with the restored content, the company is introducing a scholarship program designed to support members facing financial hardship.

A Shift in Structure

Founded by Chris Milk and Aaron Koblin as part of their VR studio, Within, Supernatural rose to prominence as a primary fitness tool during the pandemic. The platform eventually integrated into Meta's ecosystem, but it became a casualty of the tech giant's strategic shift toward AI and broader metaverse cost-cutting measures. Now operating as a leaner, independent entity, Pedante notes that the lack of corporate overhead is a primary advantage. "Because we're a small team now... essentially we're a flat organization," she said. "There's no bureaucracy. We can move really fast."

The Cost of Independence

With the transition to independence, the app is returning to its original launch pricing. Subscriptions will now cost $20 per month or $200 per year. To incentivize early adoption during the reboot, the company is offering a "Founding Members" rate, allowing users to sign up for a discounted first-year subscription of $180.

This pricing strategy tests whether a high-end VR fitness service can remain viable without the subsidies of a trillion-dollar parent company. The move also leans into the strength of the platform's "superfan" community—users who have historically shown a willingness to accept higher price points to maintain a service they rely on for both physical health and social connection.

Future Outlook

As Supernatural establishes its new footing, the industry will be watching to see if the independent model can sustain the content pipeline required for a fitness app. While the restoration of the 3,000-workout library provides a strong foundation, the company's long-term success depends on its ability to innovate and grow its user base without Meta's infrastructure. For now, the focus remains on stabilizing the service and welcoming back the community that pushed for the app's survival.
