T-Mobile to Charge $5 Monthly Fee for iOS 27 iPhone Handoff
The carrier will monetize a new Apple feature that allows a single phone number to be shared across two iPhones.
T-Mobile is introducing a monthly subscription fee for a new connectivity feature arriving with Apple's iOS 27. The move marks a rare instance of a carrier charging for a specific operating system capability.
Starting with the launch of iOS 27, T-Mobile customers will be charged $5 per month to access "iPhone Handoff." This feature allows a user to share a single phone number across two separate iPhones, with the active connection shifting to whichever device the user picks up. While Apple provides the software framework for the service, T-Mobile is implementing the charge for the underlying connectivity required to make the handoff function.
The Road to iOS 27
The feature was first teased during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote. It was later detailed by Kaiann Drance, Apple's VP of iPhone Product Marketing, during a "Surprise and Shine" event. According to Drance, iOS 27 aims to improve connectivity through smarter transitions between cellular and Wi-Fi networks, with iPhone Handoff serving as a primary tool for users who frequently switch between a primary and secondary device.
The service is launching initially through T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany. However, the pricing models differ by region; while T-Mobile is opting for a standalone monthly fee, Deutsche Telekom is integrating the capability into its existing MultiSIM offering.
A Shift in Carrier Monetization
This pricing decision represents a significant shift in how wireless carriers monetize OS-level features. Historically, features baked into an iOS update have been available to all compatible devices regardless of the carrier. By treating the eSIM and connectivity requirements of iPhone Handoff as a paid add-on, T-Mobile is creating a new revenue stream from a software-driven utility.
Industry analysts suggest this creates a discrepancy in user experience based on the provider. Users on carriers that bundle the service or offer it for free will have a distinct cost advantage over T-Mobile subscribers, despite using the same Apple hardware and software.
Future Rollout
While T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom are the first to market, the feature is expected to expand. Reports indicate that Verizon and EE are expected to add support for iPhone Handoff by the end of the year. Whether these carriers will follow T-Mobile's lead in charging a monthly fee or offer the service as part of their standard plans remains to be seen.
