Tecno Teases Industry-First 0mm Bezel-Less Smartphone Concept
The manufacturer aims to eliminate screen borders entirely through a new structural engineering approach.
Tecno is attempting to erase the final boundary between a smartphone's display and its frame. The company has teased a "Next-Gen Borderless Concept Phone" that features a true 0mm bezel, a move that could fundamentally alter the physical architecture of mobile devices.
According to company materials, the concept achieves an "industry-first zero-millimeter border," meaning the display extends completely to the edges of the chassis. This design is made possible through a combination of advanced internal stacking, structural engineering, and a proprietary new screen packaging technique. To support this radical form factor, Tecno also developed specialized core technologies for cameras, touch sensitivity, and optimized sound and UI interactions specifically for the concept.
The Race to Zero
For years, the smartphone industry has been locked in a war of attrition to reduce the black borders surrounding screens. Current flagship devices from Apple and Samsung typically achieve screen-to-body ratios of roughly 90%, while competitors like Honor and Xiaomi have pushed that figure up to 95%. While these "ultra-narrow" bezels have become the standard for high-end devices, a small gap has always remained to protect the display and house the chassis. Tecno is now attempting to close that final gap entirely, moving from narrow borders to a total absence of them.
Redefining Device Aesthetics
If this technology proves viable for mass production, it could redefine smartphone ergonomics and aesthetics. By eliminating the bezel, manufacturers can fit larger screens into existing chassis sizes, providing a more immersive viewing experience without increasing the device's overall footprint. Beyond the technical specifications, the move signals Tecno's broader ambition to establish a distinct design language that differentiates the brand from its global competitors in an increasingly crowded market.
What to Watch
The industry will get its first look at the hardware this September, as Tecno plans to officially unveil and showcase the concept at the IFA 2026 ShowStoppers event in Berlin. Observers will be looking for how the company handles accidental touch triggers and structural durability—two perennial challenges for bezel-less designs. While currently a concept intended to inform future innovations, the Berlin showcase will reveal whether a true 0mm border is a practical reality or a theoretical exercise in engineering.
