Utility vs. Novelty: Only Four Pixel 10 Pro AI Features Make the Cut for Daily Use

Google’s latest hardware push centers almost entirely on artificial intelligence, but real-world testing suggests a gap between the volume of features and their actual value. Tech journalist Brandon Miniman recently tested the AI capabilities of the Google Pixel 10 Pro for MakeUseOf to determine which tools are genuinely useful and which are mere gimmicks.

While the device is packed with AI integrations, Miniman found that only four specific features significantly altered his daily phone usage. The rest, he noted, were largely "novelties I tried once and forgot." This distinction highlights a growing tension in the smartphone market: the difference between "marketing AI," designed for headlines, and "utility AI," which solves concrete problems for the user.

The Utility Winners

Among the standout features, Pro Res Zoom leverages the Tensor G5 chip's on-device diffusion model to generate detail for images up to 100x zoom. By stacking rapid bursts of photos to enhance the final result, the tool provides a level of clarity that Miniman compared to the "enhance" trope from old crime movies.

Accessibility and productivity also saw significant gains. Live Caption allows users to convert any audio playing on the device into real-time on-screen captions without needing an internet connection. Similarly, the Pixel Recorder app has become a productivity staple by providing on-device transcription, speaker differentiation, and AI-generated summaries of conversations.

Rounding out the essential list is Pixel Screenshots. This tool uses AI to transform a chaotic library of captured screens into a searchable database, with the added ability to organize specific images into "Collections" for easier retrieval.

The Novelty Gap

Despite these wins, much of the Pixel's AI suite failed to integrate into a daily routine. According to Miniman, several high-profile features—including Gemini integrations, Hold for Me, Call screening, and Scam detection—felt more like novelties than essentials. Furthermore, tools such as Magic Cue and the Pixel Studio on-device image creator were described as "still-unfinished."

This disparity suggests that while Google is leading the charge in shipping AI volume, the most impactful tools are those that enhance basic functions like information retrieval and accessibility, rather than those attempting to automate complex social interactions or generate art.

As AI becomes the primary battleground for manufacturers like Google and Samsung, the industry is shifting toward a scrutiny of actual utility. The Pixel 10 Pro demonstrates that raw processing power, provided by the Tensor G5, is only as valuable as the software it supports.
