WhatsApp Web Launches Voice and Video Calling With Call Transfer Support
Meta's messaging platform closes the gap between browser and mobile with new calling features including waiting rooms and device transfer.
WhatsApp rolled out native voice and video calling on its web interface Tuesday, ending years of browser-based limitations that required users to switch to mobile or desktop apps for calls.
The update, confirmed by multiple tech outlets including 9to5Mac and 9to5Google, brings WhatsApp Web to feature parity with the standalone desktop application. Users can now initiate and receive both audio and video calls directly through their browser without installing additional software.
Call Transfer and Waiting Rooms
Alongside core calling functionality, WhatsApp introduced two advanced features aimed at professional and group use cases. Call transfer support allows users to move active calls between devices seamlessly — for example, starting a call on a mobile phone and transferring it to a desktop browser mid-conversation.
The platform also added a "waiting room" feature for call links. Hosts can enable a "Require approval to join" setting that gives them control over who enters a call, a feature long standard in productivity tools like Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
Closing the Browser Gap
For years, WhatsApp Web was primarily a messaging mirror, with calling capabilities restricted to the Windows and Mac desktop applications or mobile devices. The update reflects a broader industry trend of moving complex communication tools into browser-based environments, reducing friction for users who prefer not to install dedicated applications.
The changes position WhatsApp to compete more directly with enterprise communication platforms for short-term coordination and group calls. Waiting rooms address a common professional concern around call security and participant management.
Rollout Status
The features are rolling out globally as of July 28, 2026. Some app changelogs have referenced additional group call improvements, including the ability to pin participants to larger tiles, though these details have not been independently confirmed by major tech publications covering the announcement.
WhatsApp did not immediately respond to requests for comment on whether additional calling features are planned for the web platform.
