Xiaomi 18 Fold Hits China to Challenge Apple's iPhone Duo
The new 'mid-fold' device pairs a proprietary Xring O3 chip with a 200MP Leica camera system to undercut Apple's foldable debut.
Xiaomi has launched the 18 Fold in China, a wide-format foldable smartphone designed to compete directly with Apple's newly announced iPhone Duo. The strategic release on September 7 positioned the device in the market just before Apple's own foldable unveiling.
The Xiaomi 18 Fold enters the market at CNY 10,999 (approximately $1,638). Hardware specifications are headlined by a Leica-developed triple-camera system featuring a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultrawide, and a 50MP periscope telephoto lens. Under the hood, the device debuts Xiaomi's first market-ready proprietary chipset, the Xring O3, which supports 16GB of LPDDR6 RAM. The phone utilizes a "mid-fold" form factor, featuring an outer screen of approximately 5.38 inches and an inner display measuring roughly 7.58 inches.
The Shift to Wide-Format Foldables
This launch reflects a broader 2026 industry trend where flagship foldables are moving away from narrow, tall designs. The market has shifted toward a "stubby" or wide form factor, adopted by the Xiaomi 18 Fold, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, and the iPhone Duo. This design change improves ergonomics and reduces the "letterboxing" effect when viewing 16:9 content, making the unfolded experience more natural for users.
Vertical Integration and Market Pressure
By introducing the Xring O3 processor, Xiaomi is signaling a move toward deeper vertical integration. Developing its own silicon allows the company to compete more aggressively on both performance and price. The 18 Fold holds a significant potential advantage over the iPhone Duo due to its superior camera hardware, specifically the inclusion of a true telephoto lens and the high-resolution 200MP main shooter.

While Xiaomi has already hit the Chinese market, the industry is now looking toward Apple's rollout. The iPhone Duo is scheduled for release on October 23, with pre-orders beginning on October 16.
