4J Studios Unveils Patent-Pending 'Rixels' Tech to Slash Texture Memory in Reforj

The vector-bitmap hybrid technology reduces texture storage requirements by over 98%, enabling rapid content expansion for the upcoming sandbox title.

4J Studios has introduced a patent-pending graphics technology called "Rixels" to optimize its upcoming sandbox survival game, Reforj. Implemented in Title Update 8, the system replaces traditional voxel graphics with a vector-bitmap hybrid to drastically lower memory overhead without sacrificing visual clarity.

Integrated into the studio's proprietary Elements Engine, Rixels (short for Reforj Pixels) allow a single pixel within a grid space to take one of up to 23 different geometric shapes. This technical shift results in a massive reduction in texture storage requirements of 98.2%. According to technical data, typical material sizes have dropped from 4MB at a 512x512 resolution to approximately 72KB at a 20x20 resolution. The update is currently available for testing on Xbox Series X|S via the Xbox Insider Program.

A Shift in Visual Identity

4J Studios is best known for its work porting the console editions of Minecraft, but Reforj represents the studio's own open-world survival project. Currently in a pre-alpha state, the game is moving away from its initial "faceted" art style. By utilizing Rixels, the developers aim to achieve a smoother, crisper aesthetic that eliminates the blurring often associated with diagonal lines in traditional voxel-based environments.

Chris van der Kuyl, Co-founder and Chairman of 4J Studios, stated that the introduction of Rixels was "a real turning point in the game’s whole development process," suggesting the tech has fundamentally altered how the title is being built.

Impact on Development and Hardware

The primary advantage of this hybrid approach is the liberation of hardware resources. By slashing the memory footprint of textures, 4J Studios can rapidly expand the game's scope—adding new biomes, creatures, and materials—without hitting the strict memory ceilings of current-generation consoles.

Richard Reavy, CTO of 4J Studios, noted that the system allows the game to "maintain a crisp visual identity without draining hardware resources." This optimization demonstrates a novel method for maintaining a distinct "blocky" aesthetic while leveraging the power of the Xbox Series X|S to deliver high-resolution results with minimal waste.

Looking Ahead

As Reforj continues its pre-alpha testing phase, the industry will be watching to see if the Rixel approach can be scaled across larger, more complex environments without introducing new performance bottlenecks. While the memory savings are confirmed, the long-term impact on rendering speeds and the potential for the technology to be adopted in other sandbox titles remains to be seen. For now, the focus remains on refining the experience for Xbox Insider testers.
