50 Cent to Executive Produce Payday TV Adaptation
Curtis Jackson and G-Unit Film & Television partner with Starbreeze and VICE Studios to bring the heist gaming franchise to the screen.
Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson is bringing his expertise in crime drama to the world of gaming. The rapper and producer has joined the television adaptation of the Payday video game franchise as an executive producer.
Working through his G-Unit Film & Television banner, Jackson enters a production partnership with Starbreeze Entertainment and VICE Studios. The collaboration aims to translate the high-energy heist action of the gaming series into a global television event. According to Starbreeze CEO Adolf Kristjansson, the partnership is designed to do the franchise justice by working with creators who are fully immersed in the world, noting that neither G-Unit nor Starbreeze "do subtle."
A Proven Gaming Powerhouse
The Payday franchise is a long-running co-op series developed by Starbreeze, centered on masked protagonists executing high-stakes criminal plots. The IP has established a massive footprint in the gaming industry, engaging over 50 million players and generating more than $400 million in lifetime gross revenue. While the series has seen three mainline entries, the brand has experienced varying degrees of success, with Payday 2 maintaining long-term popularity while the 2023 release of Payday 3 faced a rocky launch.
Expanding the Heist Universe
This move signals a strategic pivot for Starbreeze as it seeks to expand Payday from a gaming-centric IP into a broader "heist universe" across multiple entertainment formats. By bringing in Jackson, Starbreeze is leveraging a producer with a proven track record of building cinematic crime worlds, most notably through the success of the "Power" universe. Jackson stated that teaming up with VICE Studios and Starbreeze provides an opportunity to build a high-energy franchise that "pushes the heist genre forward."
The Path Forward
The project represents a significant bet on the cross-media potential of gaming IPs, moving beyond simple adaptation toward a comprehensive brand expansion. While the executive production team is now in place, the industry will be watching for further developments regarding the project's creative direction. The primary focus remains on whether the cinematic intensity of G-Unit's previous work can successfully capture the specific cooperative tension that defined the Payday gaming experience.
