According to analyst Mat Piscatella of Circana, hardware spending fell to a July low not seen since 2020. This downturn is directly linked to the tech industry's aggressive rush to build AI data centers, which has effectively monopolized the supply of RAM used in consumer electronics. The resulting shortage has led to multiple price increases for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Sony President and CEO Hiroki Totoki emphasized the severity of the crisis, stating that the company must "take some action" to survive in the current component landscape.
An Inverted Economic Cycle
Historically, game consoles follow a predictable pricing trajectory, with costs decreasing later in their lifecycle to expand the user base and stimulate software sales. However, the current memory crisis has inverted this trend. Instead of discounts, consumers are facing steep price hikes mid-generation. This volatility extends to new hardware as well; the Nintendo Switch 2 is already scheduled for a price increase on September 1, 2026, reaching $499.99 in the U.S. market.
