Amazon and Blur Studios Developing Warhammer 40,000 Animated Series

Executive produced by Henry Cavill, the new project spins off from the 'Secret Level' anthology to follow the elite Deathwatch.

Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studios, and Games Workshop are developing an animated event series set within the grim darkness of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The project serves as a direct spinoff of the Warhammer 40,000 segment from Prime Video’s adult animated anthology series, Secret Level.

The new series focuses on the Deathwatch, an elite brotherhood of Space Marines tasked with hunting and neutralizing the galaxy's most dangerous alien threats. Dave Wilson, who directed the original Secret Level episode, returns as director and co-creator. He is joined as co-creator by John Orloff, known for his work on Band of Brothers and Masters of the Air. Animation for the production is being handled by Blur Studios.

A Strategic Expansion

This development follows Amazon's 2022 acquisition of global rights to the Warhammer 40,000 intellectual property from Games Workshop. The move aligns with the streaming giant's broader strategy of adapting high-profile game-based IPs, a trend exemplified by the recent success of Fallout. The decision to expand the Warhammer property into a standalone series comes after the Secret Level episode acted as a successful proof-of-concept for the franchise's visual style and narrative tone.

According to Dave Wilson, Secret Level was designed as a "launchpad for larger stories" rather than a simple anthology. Wilson told Variety that the fan response to the initial episode was extraordinary, noting that he has wanted to tell a long-form story in the Warhammer 40,000 setting for more than 20 years. This new series is intended to build upon that foundation to deliver a more expansive narrative.

Industry Implications

The project represents a significant push to bring the complex, niche world of tabletop wargaming into the mainstream media landscape. By pairing the high-fidelity animation capabilities of Blur Studios with the involvement of Henry Cavill—a well-known enthusiast of the franchise—Amazon is attempting to bridge the gap between hardcore hobbyists and general audiences. The production is backed by a heavy-hitting executive team, including Cavill, Natalie Viscuso, Blur's Tim Miller, Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee, and Games Workshop's Andy Smillie.

Future Outlook

While the animated event series is currently in development, it exists alongside a separate live-action project also involving Henry Cavill. The success of this animated venture could potentially pave the way for a wider cinematic universe of game adaptations under the Amazon umbrella. Observers will be watching to see how the production balances the dense lore of the Deathwatch with the requirements of a long-form television narrative.
