AMC Theaters Launches Leawood Films to Distribute Independent Cinema

The exhibition giant is leveraging its global network to bring fully financed indie projects to the big screen.

AMC Theaters launched a new movie distribution label, Leawood Films, on August 31, 2026. The move signals a strategic shift for the exhibition giant as it seeks to bridge the gap between independent filmmakers and theatrical audiences.

Leawood Films specifically targets small and mid-sized independent projects that are already fully financed and completed. By focusing on finished works, AMC aims to minimize financial exposure, describing the venture as a "low-risk opportunity." The label, named after the Kansas town where AMC is headquartered, will utilize AMC's vast exhibition network to provide the necessary screens and marketing support to get these films in front of viewers.

To guide the venture, AMC assembled a board of advisors featuring seasoned industry veterans. The group includes Toby Emmerich, former chairman of Warner Bros Group; Ricky Strauss, former marketing president for Walt Disney Studios; and Kyle Davies, a veteran of Paramount distribution. This leadership suggests a focus on professionalizing the pipeline for indie films that often struggle to secure wide theatrical releases.

Filling the Capacity Gap

The launch comes as the movie theater industry grapples with substantial excess capacity. By moving into distribution, AMC is pursuing a vertical integration strategy to control more of the content pipeline. This reduces the company's reliance on the release schedules of major studios and creates a steadier stream of content to fill seats across its global footprint, including its Odeon theaters in Europe.

Adam Aron, chairman and CEO of AMC Entertainment, stated that the objective is straightforward: "to bring more movies to theaters." He noted that moviegoers consistently show an appetite for a wide variety of content and that many outstanding films deserve the chance to be seen on the big screen.

Industry Implications

This shift represents a significant evolution in the relationship between exhibitors and distributors. Traditionally, theater chains have been passive recipients of studio content; by becoming a distributor, AMC can now actively curate its own slate to maximize revenue and diversify income streams. If successful, this model could encourage more independent creators to seek theatrical windows, knowing there is a guaranteed path to exhibition.

What to Watch

Industry observers will now look for the first slate of titles acquired by Leawood Films to see which genres and styles the label prioritizes. While the strategic goal of filling empty screens is clear, the long-term success of the venture depends on whether these low-budget independent films can draw consistent crowds in an increasingly competitive streaming environment.
