Baba Is You and Party House Set for Joint Kickstarter Launch

Indie hits Baba Is You and Party House are transitioning to tabletop via a collaborative campaign from Bitewing Games.

Two acclaimed indie video game titles, Baba Is You and Party House—a standout from the UFO 50 collection—are being adapted into physical board games. Both titles will debut through a joint Kickstarter campaign scheduled to launch on September 15, 2026.

The project is being spearheaded by publisher Bitewing Games in close collaboration with the original creators. The Party House adaptation is specifically a deckbuilding game designed by Jon Perry, the original developer of the video game version. Meanwhile, the Baba Is You board game was developed by Peter C. Hayward, known for 'That Time You Killed Me,' and the original designer Hempuli Oy.

The Challenge of Rule-Bending Mechanics

Baba Is You has earned critical acclaim for its abstract puzzle mechanics, which allow players to manipulate the very rules of the game by physically moving word blocks on a grid. UFO 50, a massive collection of 50 retro-style titles, found a particular fan favorite in Party House. Both games have cultivated strong cult followings within the indie gaming scene, characterized by a preference for innovative, often subversive, gameplay loops.

Implications for the Indie Market

Translating highly abstract, rule-bending digital mechanics into a physical tabletop format presents a significant design challenge. While digital engines can instantly update game states when a rule is changed, a board game must rely on tangible components and manual tracking to achieve the same effect. This venture highlights a growing trend where indie digital hits leverage the Kickstarter ecosystem to enter the physical hobbyist market, bypassing traditional retail hurdles to reach a dedicated core audience.

What to Watch

As the September 15 launch date approaches, the industry will be watching to see how Bitewing Games handles the translation of Baba Is You's logic-defying puzzles into a manual experience. While the designers are confirmed, specific gameplay details and the full scope of the Kickstarter rewards remain to be seen. The success of this joint campaign could signal a broader shift in how indie developers diversify their intellectual property across digital and physical mediums.
