Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere Universe Expands Into Tabletop Gaming

A strategic partnership with Brotherwise Games brings the complex magic systems of Roshar and Scadrial to the tabletop.

The sprawling fictional universe of author Brandon Sanderson is moving beyond the page and onto the gaming table. Through a comprehensive partnership with Brotherwise Games, the Cosmere is being translated into a suite of interactive experiences that allow fans to engage directly with the franchise's systemic world-building.

Brotherwise Games now serves as the official partner for Cosmere board games, managing a diverse portfolio of titles. Current offerings include 'Call to Adventure: The Stormlight Archive,' 'Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game,' and the trick-taking game 'Shards of Creation.' The expansion continues with 'The Well of Ascension' expansion for the Mistborn Deckbuilding Game, which introduces a cooperative mode where players must defend the city of Luthadel from the Koloss. Additionally, Brotherwise is preparing a strategic board game titled 'War for Roshar,' which is slated for a Kickstarter launch in the fall of 2026.

A Legacy of Interactive World-Building

The current era of Cosmere gaming follows an earlier wave of titles published by Crafty Games. These older releases focused primarily on the Mistborn series and included 'Mistborn: House War' and the 'Mistborn Adventure Game.' While these early titles introduced the concept of Cosmere gaming to the community, the shift to Brotherwise Games represents a more unified and strategic approach to expanding the intellectual property across different gaming formats.

The Appeal of Systemic Magic

This transition to tabletop gaming is a natural evolution for the Cosmere, as Sanderson's writing is defined by highly structured, rule-based magic systems. Whether it is the Allomancy of Scadrial or the Surgebinding of Roshar, these systems lend themselves to game mechanics more readily than traditional high-fantasy settings. By turning these literary rules into gameplay loops, the franchise can deepen fan engagement and provide a tactile way to experience the internal logic of the universe.

The Future of the Cosmere RPG

Beyond board games, the franchise is venturing into the tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) space with the 'Cosmere RPG.' The game is launching with a primary focus on the world of Roshar, allowing players to navigate the storm-swept landscapes of the Stormlight Archive. However, the scope of the RPG is intended to be universe-wide, with content for Mistborn and the world of Scadrial already planned for future releases. As the RPG grows, it will likely serve as the central hub for players to explore the interconnected nature of the Cosmere's various planets and magic systems.
