Bruce Campbell has officially announced his retirement from the role of Ash Williams, the iconic protagonist of the Evil Dead series. The actor confirmed he will not return to the character for any future live-action performances or animated voice-over work.

Campbell stated plainly that "Ash is done," signaling a total departure from the role he has inhabited for over four decades. The decision comes as Campbell shifts his professional focus toward his own creative ambitions, specifically directing and starring in a new project titled Ernie and Emma. When discussing the choice to prioritize his own work over franchise obligations, Campbell questioned the logic of spending time in another country on someone else's film versus working on his own movie in his hometown, noting that "it wasn't a hard choice."

Health and Legacy

Beyond his creative pursuits, Campbell's decision is heavily influenced by personal health challenges. In March 2026, the actor revealed he had been diagnosed with a form of cancer that he described as "treatable" but not "curable." This diagnosis has led him to significantly ramp down his public appearances and overall workload to manage his condition.

Campbell first stepped into the boots of Ash Williams in the original 1981 film The Evil Dead. Over the following decades, he defined the horror-comedy genre through the original trilogy and the Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead, which concluded in 2018. While the franchise has recently pivoted toward new protagonists—most notably in Evil Dead Rise—Campbell had maintained a lingering connection to the series, including a vocal cameo in the latest installment.

The Future of the Franchise

This total exit marks a pivotal transition for the Evil Dead universe. As the definitive face of the series, Campbell's absence leaves future creators with a difficult choice: they must either move entirely away from the character of Ash, utilize soundalikes, or explore AI voice recreation to maintain the character's presence in the lore.

Despite his retirement from acting in the series, Campbell will not be entirely severed from the production side. He is slated to maintain an executive producer credit on the upcoming film Evil Dead Wrath. According to confirmed reports, Wrath will serve as a prequel set in 1972 and is currently scheduled for a 2028 release.

While the franchise continues to expand its timeline, the era of Bruce Campbell as the chainsaw-wielding hero has officially come to a close, leaving a legacy as one of the most recognizable figures in cult cinema.
