Capcom Insulated from Physical Media Decline as Digital Sales Hit 90%

The Resident Evil publisher says the industry's shift toward a disc-less future will not significantly impact its operations.

Capcom is largely insulated from the gaming industry's accelerating move away from physical media. The publisher recently confirmed that the decline of the disc market will not have a "significant impact" on its business operations.

During a recent investor Q&A, Capcom revealed that approximately 90% of its unit sales are now digital. This transition to digital distribution has coincided with strong performance across its portfolio; Resident Evil Requiem has surpassed 8 million sales, while the new IP Pragmata has sold over 2 million units. The company stated, "Approximately 90% of our unit sales are digital. We do not anticipate a significant impact at this time."

The Industry Shift

This pivot comes as console manufacturers push for a digital-first ecosystem. Capcom's investor discussions highlighted PlayStation's broader move toward a digital future, reflecting a trend where hardware manufacturers are increasingly phasing out optical drives. While other industry giants are also seeing a rise in digital adoption—with Nintendo's digital sales reported to be over 60%—Capcom's transition is among the most aggressive in the sector.

Market Implications

For publishers, the migration to digital storefronts removes the substantial overhead associated with physical manufacturing, packaging, and logistics. By bypassing the retail supply chain, Capcom can realize higher margins on each unit sold. However, this shift remains a point of contention for consumers. The move toward a disc-less future eliminates the secondary market for trade-ins and removes the concept of physical ownership, which many gamers still prefer for archival purposes and price competition.

What's Next

As the industry moves toward a potential future without discs, the focus shifts to how publishers manage digital rights and storefront stability. While Capcom appears resilient to the loss of physical retail, the long-term impact on consumer pricing and ownership rights remains a critical point of observation. Market analysts will be watching to see if this 90% digital threshold becomes the new standard for AAA publishers as the next generation of hardware matures.
