CD Projekt Red Pauses The Witcher Remake to Prioritize Next-Gen Saga

The remake of the 2007 original is on hold until the development of The Witcher 4 provides the necessary technical foundations.

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the remake of the original The Witcher game is currently on hold. The pause is a strategic move to prioritize the development of The Witcher 4 and a new expansion for The Witcher 3 titled 'Songs of the Past.'

According to a CDPR representative, the remake's progress is strictly tied to the production of The Witcher 4. The studio stated that because the remake will be built on the foundation laid by the next main installment, the team must first have the necessary assets, tools, and pipelines ready to ensure efficient development. Fool's Theory, the studio tasked with the remake, is currently supporting the development of The Witcher 4 and working on the 'Songs of the Past' expansion for the third game.

The Technical Shift

First announced in 2022, the remake is being developed using Unreal Engine 5. CD Projekt Red previously indicated that the project would transform the 2007 original into an open-world experience, updating or removing outdated mechanics to bring the game up to modern standards. This transition to a new engine and open-world structure requires a massive technical overhaul, which is why the project is now dependent on the core infrastructure being built for the next chapter of the franchise.

Strategic Pipeline Implications

This decision signals a significant shift in CDPR's production pipeline. Rather than operating as a standalone parallel project, the remake has become a derivative of the next-gen foundation. By sharing the same technical DNA as The Witcher 4, the remake is positioned to be a high-fidelity experience, but this dependency effectively pushes its timeline back. This comes at a time when CDPR is managing an expansive portfolio, which includes the start of a new Witcher trilogy and the ramping up of hiring for a new intellectual property codenamed Project Hadar.

Looking Ahead

The Witcher 4 is currently slated for a 2028 release. Because the remake relies on the tools and assets from that project, its eventual launch is closely linked to the progress of the main series. While the studio has not provided a specific release date for the remake, the current priority remains the 2028 target for the new saga and the completion of the upcoming expansion for The Witcher 3.
