CD Projekt Red Shifts Engineering Strategy to Ensure Witcher 4 Stability

The studio is prioritizing cross-platform functionality from the start to avoid the technical failures that plagued Cyberpunk 2077.

CD Projekt Red has implemented a new development strategy for the next installment of The Witcher series to ensure the game is functional across all target platforms early in production. The move is designed to prevent the severe performance issues that defined the launch of the studio's previous major title.

According to studio co-CEO Michal Nowakowski, The Witcher 4 is currently running on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Nowakowski emphasized that the team is no longer deferring optimization until the end of the development cycle, stating, "You come to the studio, you launch Witcher 4 right now... You can launch it on PC. You can launch it on PS5. You can launch it on Xbox Series X, and it's going to run." To support this, CDPR has overhauled its internal milestone tracking, requiring technical "checkmarks" to be met immediately rather than being pushed to later stages of production.

Lessons from Cyberpunk 2077

This strategic pivot follows the disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077, which suffered from critical technical failures, particularly on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The instability was so severe that Sony temporarily removed the game from the PlayStation Store. Historically, CDPR utilized a "tone down" approach, where the game was developed for high-end PCs and then scaled down for consoles. While this method proved successful for The Witcher 3, it failed to account for the increased complexity of Cyberpunk 2077.

Rebuilding Consumer Trust

By prioritizing cross-platform stability from the outset, CDPR is attempting a fundamental shift in its engineering philosophy. The studio is seeking to rebuild consumer trust and avoid the reputational and financial fallout associated with releasing a product in an "unplayable" state. Nowakowski noted that the studio is no longer willing to gamble on late-stage optimization, adding, "Since then, we don't take chances. We want to be sure that it actually works."

The Road to 2028

While the game is already functional on its target hardware, it remains in the relatively early stages of its journey to market. CDPR is currently targeting a 2028 release date for the title. Industry observers will be watching to see if this "stability-first" approach can be maintained as the game's scope expands and more complex systems are integrated into the build.
