Critical Role is bringing another fan-favorite origin story to mobile readers this summer. Vox Machina Origins, the prequel comic series from Dark Horse Comics, launches on Webtoon on August 4, 2026, announced during WEBTOON Entertainment's San Diego Comic-Con 2026 panel.
The series becomes the second Critical Role title on the platform after The Mighty Nein Origins, continuing the partnership between Dark Horse and Webtoon expanded in June 2025. The move shifts a successful print series into a free, vertical-scrolling format for mobile-first audiences.
Free Entry Point for New Fans
The first three episodes will be available at no cost upon launch. The comic chronicles how the original Vox Machina party first met and formed their group, serving as backstory to the characters who later starred in Critical Role's first campaign and Amazon Prime Video animated series.
Vox Machina Origins originally debuted as a traditional print comic from Dark Horse in 2017. The series filled in gaps between early livestream sessions, detailing the party's formation before the main campaign began. Its transition to Webtoon follows the same path as The Mighty Nein Origins, which adapted the second campaign's prequel material into the platform's signature scrolling format.
