Crystal Dynamics to Reimagine Original Tomb Raider in 'Legacy of Atlantis'
The upcoming Unreal Engine 5 title blends 1996 nostalgia with modern RPG mechanics ahead of a 2027 release.
Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog are bringing Lara Croft back to her beginnings with 'Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis.' The title serves as a high-fidelity reimagining of the franchise's original 1996 debut, timed to coincide with the series' 30th anniversary.
Scheduled for release on February 12, 2027, the game will launch across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Developed using Unreal Engine 5, the project introduces several modern gameplay systems that deviate from the original's design. These include a 'Focus' meter used for acrobatic maneuvers and bullet-time, as well as herb brewing for character buffs. Additionally, the game implements an RPG-like skill tree where players redeem discovered artifacts for points to upgrade Lara's abilities.
A Shift in Design Philosophy
This project marks a strategic pivot for Crystal Dynamics following the 'Survivor' reboot trilogy. By returning to the first adventure, the studio is attempting to bridge the gap between the series' roots and contemporary gaming expectations. Design Director Jason Epps noted that the ability to increase Lara's power—a feature seen in the Survivor series—makes the player feel more engaged in the experience.
However, the integration of these RPG elements has created tension among veteran fans. While the original 1996 game was defined by its stark difficulty and purity of exploration, the addition of skill trees and buffs represents a broader industry trend of modernizing classic titles to appeal to wider audiences. Game Director Raul Siqueira acknowledged this delicate balance, stating that the secret to a successful remake is knowing what to change and what to leave alone.
The Road to Catalyst
'Legacy of Atlantis' is not a standalone effort but part of a larger roadmap for the franchise. The title is positioned as a precursor to another upcoming project, 'Tomb Raider: Catalyst,' which is expected to arrive in 2028. This sequence suggests a long-term plan to redefine the series' identity by first revisiting its foundation before moving toward new narratives.
As the February 2027 release date approaches, the industry will be watching to see if the blend of Unreal Engine 5 visuals and RPG mechanics can satisfy both the nostalgic core fanbase and a new generation of players. For now, the focus remains on whether this reimagining can honor the legacy of the original while evolving the gameplay for the modern era.
