Disney is expanding the universe of its 1951 animated classic with a new Young Adult novel titled "Wondrous." The project celebrates the 75th anniversary of the original film, bringing a beloved character back into the spotlight for a new generation of readers.
Written by Heather Fawcett, author of "Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries," the novel follows an older Alice who returns to Wonderland years after her initial adventures. In the story, Alice flees 19th-century London to escape an arranged marriage to a Baron. She dreams of opening a traveling magic tea shop, but her return to the surreal realm introduces a complex twist: the presence of multiple versions of herself. The narrative highlights the constraints of Alice's era, noting that a daughter could be bartered away while a field could not.
A New Narrative Direction
While the 1951 film concludes with Alice waking from a dream, "Wondrous" treats the experience as a recurring possibility. By transitioning the character into adulthood within the rigid social structures of Victorian London, Disney evolves the IP from a childhood fantasy into a coming-of-age story. The plot introduces higher stakes than the original; the Queen of Hearts tasks various versions of Alice with stopping a trio of mock dragons. The penalty for failure in this trial is permanent exile from Wonderland.
