Exodus Director: Salt the Octopus is Not a Romance Option

Narrative director Drew Karpyshyn has confirmed that one of the most anticipated companions in the upcoming RPG Exodus is off-limits for romance. The revelation addresses growing community speculation following the game's Gamescom 2026 trailer.
Speaking with Polygon, Karpyshyn explicitly stated that Salt, an "Awakened" octopus who operates a mech suit, cannot be romanced by the player. The reason is rooted in character lore: Salt finds humans physically repulsive due to their anatomy. "Salt just thinks humans are gross," Karpyshyn explained, noting that from Salt's perspective, humans simply do not have enough legs.
The Mechanics of Affection
Relationship building in Exodus is not passive; it is tied to a rigorous affinity system and the game's overarching morality framework. Players must actively pursue romances, as Karpyshyn noted that players will not "accidentally" enter a romantic relationship unless they are intentionally trying to do so.
This affinity is influenced by a morality system that tracks player behavior on a red-and-blue scale. Kind actions contribute to a "Paladin" rating (blue), while more aggressive or "dick-ish" behavior earns an "Immortal" rating (red). This system dictates how companions perceive the player and determines which relationship paths become available.
A New Era for the Centauri Cluster
Developed by Archetype Entertainment, Exodus is set 40,000 years in the future within the Centauri Cluster. The world is populated by a diverse array of companions, ranging from mercenaries and Travelers to "Celestials," who are evolved post-humans. By integrating morality ratings directly into relationship building, the developers are aiming for a level of flexibility and realism that builds upon previous genre benchmarks.
Release Details
While Salt may be unavailable for romance, players will soon be able to experience the rest of the Centauri Cluster. Exodus is scheduled for release on April 7, 2027. The title will launch on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
