Exodus Narrative Director: Player Choices Will Determine Companion Fates

Archetype Entertainment's sci-fi RPG will feature a relationship system where decisions can permanently alienate or remove companions.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · September 6, 2026

Player decisions in the upcoming sci-fi RPG Exodus will have permanent consequences for the game's cast, according to Narrative Director Drew Karpyshyn. The developer has confirmed that the journey's conclusion will not necessarily include every companion who began the adventure.

Karpyshyn detailed a relationship system where the bond between the player and their allies evolves based on specific choices. These interactions can either strengthen a connection or create friction, with the latter potentially pushing companions away. "Depending on choices you make, by the end of the game, you might not have every companion with you that you started with," Karpyshyn stated, emphasizing that the evolution of these bonds is a direct result of player agency.

A Legacy of Choice

Exodus is being developed by Archetype Entertainment, a studio led by BioWare veterans. Karpyshyn himself served as the lead writer for the first two Mass Effect titles, games renowned for their cinematic storytelling and branching narratives. Set 40,000 years in the future, Exodus focuses on the survival of humanity and the complex implications of time dilation. Because of the team's pedigree, the industry widely views the project as a spiritual successor to the Mass Effect series, placing a high premium on the quality of its narrative branching.

High-Stakes Narrative Design

The confirmation of permanent character loss or departure suggests a high-stakes design philosophy. By tying companion presence to a relationship system, Archetype Entertainment is leaning into a model of meaningful consequence rather than static storytelling. This approach mirrors the tension found in high-stakes RPG missions where preparation and interpersonal diplomacy determine who survives. For fans of the cinematic RPG genre, this commitment to agency ensures that the game's ending is a reflection of the player's specific moral and social trajectory rather than a predetermined script.

Looking Ahead

Exodus is scheduled to launch on April 7, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. While the broad strokes of the relationship system are now clear, the specific triggers for companion departures remain undisclosed. Observers will be watching to see how the game balances these permanent losses with the overall pacing of the story and whether the game will offer multiple distinct endings based on the final composition of the player's crew.
