Final Fantasy VII Revelation Tackles Open World Fatigue With Bigger Map, Better Guidance

Director Naoki Hamaguchi promises enhanced player direction for the Spring 2027 finale despite expanded scope.

Square Enix is confronting open world fatigue head-on in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, set for Spring 2027. Director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed the game will feature a world larger than Rebirth's while implementing new systems to prevent players from feeling overwhelmed by scale.

Bigger World, Clearer Direction

"There are a lot of open world games out in the world right now, and [the idea of 'open world fatigue'] is a very important concept to me," Hamaguchi told Eurogamer. The director acknowledged that while Revelation's map expands both horizontally and vertically compared to Rebirth, the team is prioritizing guidance over pure freedom.

"The world is even bigger than it was in Rebirth, so it is more important than ever for us to ensure there's enough guidance here, so people have no issues enjoying what this game has to offer," Hamaguchi said.

Highwind Changes Everything

The Highwind airship introduces seamless parachute deployment, allowing players to drop into any location on the map. During the initial descent phase, visual markers guide players toward objectives and mini-games, providing direction without removing exploration agency. This system addresses criticism that Rebirth's vast spaces sometimes lacked clear purpose.

Combat Evolution via FITS

Hamaguchi also revealed a new FITS (Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear) system that grants characters access to job classes from classic Final Fantasy titles. The director explained to Eurogamer that while Rebirth's hybrid combat reached a "perfected state," simply continuing that system would risk feeling stale.

"If we were to just continue to adopt the same exact hybrid combat system... a lot of people are probably going to feel that it's a bit stale," Hamaguchi said.

Spring 2027 Launch

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled to launch in Spring 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 simultaneously. The trilogy began with a linear Remake before Rebirth introduced expansive open-world elements. While Rebirth received critical acclaim, some players reported feeling overwhelmed by side content volume and occasional lack of direction.

Hamaguchi's explicit acknowledgment of open world fatigue signals a design shift toward more intentional pacing while maintaining the epic scope expected for the series' conclusion. The balance between exploration freedom and narrative momentum will likely determine whether Revelation satisfies as both a gameplay experience and story finale.
