Firevolt's Co-op RC Adventure WheelMates Launches September 1

The miniature-scale action-adventure game features a 'Friend's Pass' to lower the barrier for cooperative play.

Firevolt has announced the September 1 launch of WheelMates, a two-player cooperative action-adventure game. The title tasks players with navigating a miniature world to solve a mystery, blending precision driving with collaborative puzzle-solving.

Players control miniature RC cars as they explore the home and laboratory of an eccentric scientist to uncover the circumstances of his disappearance. Teamwork is the core of the experience, requiring players to solve puzzles and complete challenges within a miniature-scale environment. While the game debuts on PC via Steam, versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are currently in development.

A Miniature World

WheelMates transforms ordinary household settings—such as kitchen counters and bookshelves—into treacherous terrain and ramps. This design approach draws inspiration from the miniature-scale driving seen in classics like Micro Machines and Motorstorm: RC, while integrating the cooperative mechanics popularized by titles such as It Takes Two. To refine the experience, Firevolt updated a PC demo during the Summer Game Fest Future Games Show on June 6, 2026, which introduced revised handling, updated controls, and official support for the Steam Deck.

Lowering the Barrier to Entry

To encourage cooperative play, Firevolt is implementing a 'Friend's Pass' model. This system allows one player who owns the game to invite a friend to join the co-op campaign for free, ensuring that pairs can experience the story without both needing to purchase a full copy. This strategy targets a growing market demand for dedicated co-op experiences by removing the financial friction often associated with multiplayer indie titles.

Market Implications

By combining a nostalgic 'tiny car' aesthetic with modern adventure mechanics, WheelMates is attempting to carve a specific niche in the competitive indie action-adventure market. The focus on accessibility via the Friend's Pass suggests a strategic move to maximize the game's reach among social gamers and pairs who prefer curated, shared experiences over traditional competitive multiplayer.

What to Watch

While the PC launch date is set for September 1, Firevolt has not yet provided specific release windows for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. Observers will be watching to see if the console versions launch simultaneously or follow a staggered release schedule after the initial Steam debut.
