Fortnite 'Override' Season Debuts Sonic the Hedgehog and New Sprite Mechanics

Epic Games blends gaming icons and community designs in Chapter 7 Season 4 with 11 new Sprites.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · August 20, 2026

Epic Games has launched Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, titled "Override," introducing 11 new Sprites centered on a "Gaming Legends" theme. The update integrates high-profile intellectual property and community-driven content to evolve the game's companion system.

A centerpiece of the update is a collaboration with Sonic the Hedgehog, which brings three Epic-rarity Sprites into the match. The Sonic Sprite increases a player's sprint speed, the Tails Sprite enables hovering, and the Shadow Sprite provides an automatic weapon reload over time. Beyond these collaborations, the season introduces Mythic Sprites, including the Klombo Sprite, which grants random items, and the Crown Sprite, which provides additional Crown Wins.

Epic Games also expanded the Sprite system with two new variants: Gold, which offers 3x bonus XP from eliminations, and Cheat Master, designed to simplify Cheat Code input. To address player progression and legacy, the developer added a "Sprite Garden," a dedicated space where players can preserve and showcase the Sprites they collected during Chapter 7 Season 3.

The Strategy of Engagement

The return of Sprites in Season 4 follows their initial appearance in Season 3, but with a strategic shift toward corporate collaborations and user-generated content. By pairing established icons like Sonic with the "Create-A-Sprite" contest, Epic Games is blending professional IP with community creativity. This approach allows the developer to maintain high player engagement by rewarding the community's artistic contributions while leveraging the draw of global gaming brands to attract new and returning players.

Future Updates

While the core roster is live, the season's content will continue to expand. Epic Games has confirmed that five winners from the "Create-A-Sprite" competition—Bullet, Dumpster Dive, Honey, Pond, and X-Ray—are scheduled to be added to the game via mid-season updates. These community-designed additions ensure that the "Gaming Legends" theme remains dynamic throughout the season. Players can also expect quality-of-life improvements, including reduced Sprite Dust costs for summoning and new in-match collection indicators to streamline the gathering process, ensuring the companion system remains accessible to all skill levels.
