FromSoftware and Nintendo Unveil 'The Duskbloods' as Switch 2 Exclusive

The collaboration blends grotesque Soulsborne aesthetics with accessible party-game mechanics in a new PvPvE title.

FromSoftware and Nintendo have announced 'The Duskbloods,' an online PvPvE exclusive developed for the upcoming Switch 2 hardware. The title represents a rare strategic alignment between the creators of the 'Soulsborne' series and the family-friendly giant, merging high-concept horror with chaotic multiplayer loops.

According to IGN, the game functions as a hybrid of 'Bloodborne' and the time-limited preparation phases found in 'Kirby Air Ride's City Trial' or 'Smash Run.' Players compete in a large map to level up and gather power-ups during a timed phase before entering a final crowning round to determine the victor. To maintain accessibility, the game employs 'rubber-banding' mechanics, granting attack boosts to players lower on the Virtue Point ladder when facing higher-ranked opponents. Furthermore, death is framed as an 'opportunity cost'—resulting in lost time rather than the severe setbacks typical of FromSoftware titles.

A Departure in Design

This partnership marks a significant pivot for both entities. FromSoftware is renowned for methodical, high-difficulty combat and oppressive atmospheres, while Nintendo typically avoids M-rated publishing ventures outside of Japan. By bringing a grotesque, 'Bloodborne'-style aesthetic to a Nintendo platform, the companies are experimenting with a tonal contrast that challenges the traditional identity of both brands.

Strategic Implications

For Nintendo, 'The Duskbloods' signals an embrace of 'hardcore' developers to bolster the appeal of its next-generation hardware. For FromSoftware, the project is an exercise in accessibility. Hidetaka Miyazaki noted that the game was designed with players who struggle with high-intensity action in mind, stating, "Personally, I am not very great at these high-intensity action games and things like PvP... So, at the start, the audience really is just myself while thinking about how I would go at this."

Looking Ahead

As the industry awaits the official launch of the Switch 2, 'The Duskbloods' serves as a primary showcase for the console's online capabilities and a test of whether FromSoftware's brand of atmospheric dread can translate to a party-game format. While the core loop has been revealed via network tests, the full extent of the game's progression systems and the final release date remain to be seen.
