God of War Laufey Hits PS5 on February 16, 2027
Santa Monica Studio confirms release date at SDCC 2026, with Faye taking center stage in the mythological saga.
Sony Santa Monica Studio has officially locked in a release date for God of War Laufey: February 16, 2027. The announcement came during a dedicated panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where Cory Barlog, Head of Creative at Santa Monica Studio, presented details about the upcoming title.
Faye Takes the Lead
Laufey shifts the franchise's focus to Faye, Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother, whose Giant heritage has long loomed over the series' Norse saga. The game will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5, available both digitally and on physical disc.
The physical release carries added significance: Sony announced in July 2026 that it will end physical disc production for new PlayStation games in January 2028. Laufey will be among the final wave of disc-based releases before that deadline.
A Bridge Between Stories
Barlog framed Laufey as both a continuation and a setup. "I wanted to show an extension of this world where the characters you'll encounter are unexpected," he said at SDCC. "Laufey is a continuation of what came before and to prepare and expand what comes next."
Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that a Kratos-led God of War title will follow Laufey, ensuring narrative continuity while the studio experiments with a new protagonist. The game explores what Barlog described as the "afterlife of the gods" and delves deeper into Faye's history.
Years in the Making
According to multiple reports, the concept for a Faye-centric game dates back to 2018, when the idea was first pitched to actress Deborah Ann Woll. At Florida Supercon, Woll addressed backlash to the game's reveal, stating she was "totally unbothered" by the criticism.
Laufey was initially teased during Summer Game Fest and a State of Play presentation in June 2026, but the SDCC panel marked the first concrete release window.
Platform Availability
The game is confirmed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Some outlets, including Eurogamer, have reported that Sony may no longer release non-live-service titles on PC, which would preclude a PC port for Laufey. However, this policy has not been independently confirmed through official Sony channels, and the PlayStation blog's July 2026 announcement about ending physical media production did not address PC release plans.
For now, PS5 remains the only confirmed platform for God of War Laufey when it launches February 16, 2027.
