GTA 6 PS5 Codes in Japan Expire 170 Days After Launch Due to Local Law

Rockstar confirms Japanese physical editions carry redemption deadline tied to Payment Services Act, while Xbox versions remain unaffected.

Rockstar Games has confirmed that physical copies of Grand Theft Auto VI sold in Japan for PlayStation 5 will expire 170 days after the game's November 19, 2026 launch date, requiring buyers to redeem their download codes within that window or lose access entirely.

The Japanese PS5 physical editions do not contain game discs. Instead, they function as code-in-a-box products, with the download code itself carrying the expiration date. According to Rockstar's support page, product codes in Japan will expire 170 days after the issuance date, which coincides with the launch date.

Why the Expiration Exists

The restriction stems from Japan's Payment Services Act, also known as the Funds Settlement Act. Under this regulation, issuers of prepaid payment instruments must deposit reserve funds to cover the value of unused codes unless the product expires within six months. By setting the expiration at 170 days, publishers avoid this financial obligation entirely.

This legal loophole allows companies to sidestep reserve fund requirements while still selling physical-style packaging that appeals to collectors and retailers who prefer tangible products.

PS5 Only, Xbox Exempt

Importantly, the expiration applies only to PS5 physical editions in Japan. Xbox physical editions in the region do not carry this restriction, as Microsoft's codes are not region-locked and do not expire. This creates an unusual platform disparity for Japanese consumers purchasing the same game.

The confirmation came after multiple outlets, including IGN and GHacks, reviewed Rockstar's support documentation. Dexerto first reported the expiration policy based on the support page language.

Broader Industry Shift

This development arrives as the gaming industry continues moving toward digital-only distribution. Sony recently announced it will stop producing physical game discs for new PlayStation releases starting January 2028, according to the company's official blog.

The code-in-a-box approach for GTA 6 represents a middle ground: physical packaging for retail visibility without the manufacturing costs of optical media. However, it also highlights growing tensions around digital ownership and consumer rights.

What Remains Unclear

Rockstar has not fully clarified whether the 170-day expiration applies to the base game code, a separate DLC code, or both in the Japanese PS5 version. This ambiguity leaves some uncertainty for buyers about exactly what must be redeemed within the window.

For Japanese collectors and late buyers, the expiration creates genuine risk. A physical copy purchased after the window closes becomes worthless, unable to deliver the game it advertises. The restriction underscores how regional regulations can reshape product design in ways that disadvantage consumers while protecting publisher balance sheets.

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
