IDW Taps Matthew Rosenberg for TMNT Series as Last Ronin Trilogy Ends in 2027
The veteran writer takes over the flagship comic from Gene Luen Yang with issue #25, promising a grounded New York story while the dark future saga concludes.
IDW Publishing announced a major creative transition for its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles flagship series at Comic-Con 2026, confirming that Matthew Rosenberg will take over writing duties from Gene Luen Yang starting with issue #25 in January 2027. Artist Juann Cabal joins Rosenberg for what the publisher is billing as a new era of the long-running franchise.
The announcement comes as IDW also confirmed the third and final volume of 'TMNT: The Last Ronin' trilogy will debut in summer 2027, closing out one of the publisher's most ambitious storylines while opening a fresh chapter for the ongoing series.
A New York Native Takes the Shell
Rosenberg, a native New Yorker, said he aims to ground the series in the city's actual geography and the family dynamics of the four teenage protagonists. His opening arc unfolds over a chaotic 24-hour period and features real-world locations including the Bronx and Pelham.
"I want to honor everything he's done because I love it, but also don't want to do a cover band of it," Rosenberg said of Yang's tenure.
Yang's run incorporated Japanese mythology and channelled the "wild" energy of the original Mirage Studios comics from the 1980s. The creative shift follows a recent relaunch that restructured IDW's TMNT line.
"You know when you're working on a property as big as the Ninja Turtles that it doesn't belong to you," Yang said. "It's sort of a melting pot of creative energy."
Last Ronin Returns
The finale of 'The Last Ronin' trilogy, subtitled 'Return for New York,' brings the dark future saga to its conclusion. The storyline, which depicts a dystopian New York with a lone surviving Turtle, has been one of IDW's biggest commercial successes.
The dual announcement signals IDW's strategy of maintaining continuity between its flagship ongoing series and high-profile limited series. Rosenberg's street-level approach contrasts with the apocalyptic scope of The Last Ronin, though both projects center on the Turtles' connection to New York City.
Creative Continuity
IDW's TMNT line has remained one of the publisher's core properties. The series has seen multiple creative teams, each bringing distinct tonal shifts while maintaining the core premise of four mutant brothers navigating crime, family, and adolescence in an urban environment.
Rosenberg's previous work includes runs on major superhero titles where he focused on character-driven narratives and ensemble dynamics. Cabal brings a cinematic action style to the pencilling duties.
Issue #25 arrives in January 2027, with The Last Ronin III following in summer. IDW has not yet announced whether the ongoing series will receive a new volume number or continue its current numbering scheme beyond the transition.
