Kingdom Hearts 4 is officially on track for a late 2027 release, according to leadership at Square Enix. The confirmation comes as the series prepares for its 25th anniversary, providing a definitive timeline for one of the most anticipated titles in the action-RPG genre.

During the Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23 2026 on August 14, series creator Tetsuya Nomura and co-director Tai Yasue addressed growing online speculation regarding potential setbacks. Nomura explicitly denied rumors of a pushback, stating, "Online, some people were saying the release date may get pushed back. I want to set the record straight: That is not happening." Yasue reinforced this confidence, describing the current state of development as "very smooth" and calling the late 2027 window a "100% thing."

Expanding the Platform Reach

In a significant shift for the franchise, the developers confirmed that Kingdom Hearts 4 will launch across a wide array of hardware. The title is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Notably, the game will also be available on the Nintendo Switch 2, aligning the release with the next generation of gaming hardware.

Beyond the technical specifications, the showcase revealed new content for the game's universe. It has been confirmed that Pixar's Coco will be featured as a playable world, continuing the series' tradition of blending original narrative arcs with iconic Disney and Pixar properties.

Industry Implications

This guarantee is particularly noteworthy given the historical context of the franchise. Kingdom Hearts is well-known within the industry for exceptionally long development cycles and a tendency toward unexpected delays. For Nomura and Yasue to offer a "100%" certainty suggests that the project has moved out of the volatile early production phases and into a stable final production stage.

Furthermore, the decision to target a multi-platform launch—including Xbox and PC—marks a strategic pivot for Square Enix. By breaking away from the traditional PlayStation exclusivity that defined much of the series' history, the developers are positioning the fourth installment to capture the widest possible global audience during the 25th-anniversary celebrations.

Looking Ahead

While the release window is now solidified, the community remains focused on how the game will utilize the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. With the development team reporting a smooth trajectory, the industry will be watching for further gameplay demonstrations and a concrete date as 2027 approaches. For now, the developers have made it clear that the project is aligned with its goals and the late 2027 target remains the definitive objective.
