Koei Tecmo and SpiralAI Unveil 'RyzaChat' AI-Driven Mobile RPG

The upcoming title replaces traditional menus with a conversational AI interface while pledging a 'creator-first' approach to art and voice acting.

Koei Tecmo’s Gust studio has partnered with Japanese startup SpiralAI to launch "RyzaChat: Your Midsummer Dream Story with AI Ryza." Scheduled for release in August 2026 on iOS and Android, the mobile title aims to redefine player interaction by replacing traditional menus and fixed scripts with a conversational AI interface.

In RyzaChat, players interact with an AI version of the series' protagonist to manage core gameplay elements, including exploration, alchemy, combat, and quest progression on Kurken Island. The experience is split into two distinct modes: an RPG mode dedicated to quests and progression, and a Chat mode for casual conversation. According to the developers, the goal is to allow players to "create your own adventure." Early gameplay objectives include helping Ryza build a boat to leave Kurken Island, an action that unlocks the game's world map.

A Technical Shift in Dialogue

The game's conversational engine is powered by SpiralAI’s proprietary "SpiralLLM," which has been trained specifically on authorized Atelier Ryza scenarios and reference materials to maintain narrative consistency. To bring the character to life, the developers are utilizing the "Kotodama" voice synthesis model. Unlike many AI projects that scrape existing data, this system uses new recordings specifically made by the original voice actress, Yuri Noguchi.

Addressing the AI Controversy

This venture arrives during a period of intense industry friction regarding the use of generative AI to replace human labor. In response, Koei Tecmo and SpiralAI have explicitly detailed a "creator-first" framework. The companies have confirmed that no AI-generated artwork or video is used in the project; all visuals were created by human artists under the supervision of the original illustrator, Toridamono. Furthermore, the project implements a royalty-sharing system for the original voice actors and illustrators to ensure fair compensation.

Industry Implications

RyzaChat represents a high-profile attempt to integrate Large Language Models (LLMs) directly into core gameplay loops. By removing the static UI and branching dialogue trees common in the RPG genre, the developers are testing whether open-ended AI interaction can provide a more immersive experience. More importantly, by eschewing AI-generated art and establishing revenue-sharing agreements, the partnership is attempting to create an ethical blueprint for AI-driven IP extensions that avoids the "replacement" narrative currently dominating the discourse between tech companies and creative professionals.

What to Watch

As the August 2026 launch approaches, the industry will be watching to see if the SpiralLLM can maintain the character depth of the original Atelier Ryza trilogy without the guardrails of a fixed script. While the technical framework for the "creator-first" approach is set, the actual efficacy of the royalty-sharing model in a live-service mobile environment remains a key point of interest for labor advocates and developers alike.
