Mahershala Ali exits scrapped Marvel 'Blade' project for independent thriller
The actor says Marvel's funded physical training for the failed reboot effectively subsidized his new film.
Actor Mahershala Ali has confirmed he is finished with Marvel Studios' reboot of Blade, a project scrapped after years of development delays. The departure marks the end of a long-stalled attempt to revive the vampire-hunting franchise.
Ali revealed that while the film will not move forward, the experience provided a practical benefit for his next venture. He spent over a year in paid physical training funded by Marvel for the Blade role, a preparation he says made it possible for him to be fit and ready for his new independent action thriller, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. "Actually I'm really grateful, they helped pay for our movie, so thank you," Ali stated, noting that the production could not have afforded such preparation otherwise. The new project reunites Ali with director Bassam Tariq, who was previously attached to direct Blade.
A Cycle of Development Hell
The Blade reboot was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, intended to reboot the series originally headlined by Wesley Snipes. However, the project never entered production, suffering from chronic "starts and stops" during the writing process. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige admitted the project went through three or four different incarnations of the script—including versions set as period pieces—before the studio failed to find a narrative they felt confident producing. Feige described himself as a "gigantic loser and failure" regarding the collapse of the reboot.
Implications for the MCU
The failure of Blade highlights ongoing creative struggles within the Marvel Cinematic Universe's development pipeline as the studio grapples with script consistency and project management. While the MCU has faced several high-profile delays, the Blade situation is particularly notable for its length of stagnation. For Ali, however, the collapse serves as a rare instance where a failed studio project provided tangible value to an independent production, allowing him to transition immediately into a physically demanding lead role without the financial burden of a year-long training camp.
What Remains
As Ali moves forward, stating, "I'm done. I'm doing this and anything else moving forward," the future of the Blade IP remains uncertain. While the current reboot is scrapped, it is unclear if Marvel Studios will attempt another iteration of the character in the future or if the franchise will remain dormant. For now, the focus shifts to the collaboration between Ali and Tariq on their independent thriller, leveraging the physical preparation that Marvel inadvertently provided.
